About the ACT and SAT While the SAT is the original college entrance exam, the ACT recently passed the SAT as the most popular prompting the SAT to revise it's test for the class of 2017. The last "old SAT" was administered in January 2016, and the "new SAT" will be available starting March 2016. The Test Experts recommends taking both the ACT and SAT at least once and then focusing on the one you did better on.

ACT Quick Facts

  • The test has four mandatory and one optional section. The sections are always in the same order:

    • English (45 minutes, 75 questions)

    • Math (60 minutes, 60 questions)

    • Reading (35 minutes , 40 questions)

    • Science (35 minutes, 40 questions)

    • Optional Essay (30 minutes, 1 question)

  • Total time without the essay is 3 hours, with the essay is 3.5 hours

  • The test is taken on a scantron answer sheet (number two pencil, bubble in your answer)

  • Each section mandatory section is scored on a scale of 1-36. A composite score between 1 and 36 is also given. It is calculated by averaging the 4 individual section scores and rounding to the nearest whole number.

  • The essay is scored separately and does not contribute to the composite score.
